Met Gala

For a long time, the Met Gala has dominated fashion culture. It was the event of the year, the one where all heads would turn. The one people were waiting and hoping to receive an invitation from. One woman, one pair of eyes, dictating the entire fashion community. But what is it? Is it a fundraiser? A spectacle? A cultural authority? A fashion ritual? It's all and none.

Historically, it's a fundraising event to support the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute. In recent years, it became bigger. A spectacle. An event we are impatiently waiting for. Almost a rite of passage that public figures had to attend in order to gain legitimacy in the fashion world. Anna Wintour's approval used to be everything an upcoming designer or public figure would want. It shaped culture.

In recent years, a change started happening where the event had less impact and less people were craving it. An event that used to be talked about months later is now easily forgotten after a week. It's now bigger than ever, more spectacle than we've ever seen before. It's still not enough. What is missing?

Visibility

When it comes to being visible, the Met Gala absolutely is. We all know when to look for it, the first Monday of May. It has been anchored in all our minds. The rollout of the entire event from the theme leaking sometimes between December and January and the guest list making an apparition between February and May, Yes, it's highly visible.

It's seen everywhere. All media outlets are focused on the event and ready to make their best and worst dressed lists as soon as the event is concluded. The most followed people in the world often attend. Paparazzis waiting in line to photograph people on the red carpet. The red carpet itself telling the story of the theme. It's impossible to ignore.

Invitations flying around with the top of the top. A guest list overly curated. People planning their outfits months in advance. Brands paying for tables in order to be noticed by the powerhouse Anna Wintour and get a chance of feature in Vogue. Visibility is undeniable. But, if it is seen everywhere, does that make it powerful?

Impact

An event that used to be remembered and talked about for months seem to have mysteriously lost influence. People have seemingly moved on. A week is currently the shelf life more or less. It is seen, but not remembered enough. Lists are made and news cycle is seemingly moving on fast. So fast, too fast even.

Brands are also seemingly moving on from this once, extremely coveted event. Seeing less public figure wearing major designer brands. Established brands are no longer parading. There was a time when the list of designers dressing people on the red carpet would be too long. This list has now been narrowed down. We're seeing the same designers every year dressing many people.

A question remains, what happens to the diversification of designers on the red carpet? Why do we keep seeing the same names? Putting all differences aside for now and focusing solely on the Met Gala's influence over the industry, one question needs answers: If it is not remembered, does it still matter?

Conclusion

Visibility and impact are often being confused as visibility could easily be mistaken for impact. If the night achieves visibility but fails to sustain impact... What function does it actually serve?

Therefore, we recommend:

Duality Investigation - to analyze the concept of curation.

Cerva approves duality investigation moving forward.

Report Filed. Case Continues.

This case requires further investigation. Mr. Contrast from Inbaciato will be the lead.
